02 · How coins are priced

Coins have two values — we evaluate both.

Unlike scrap jewelry, gold coins can be worth more than their metal content. Rare dates, key mint marks, and high grades command premiums. We look at both and pay whichever is higher.

The melt value of a coin is its pure gold content times the current spot price. A 1 oz American Gold Eagle contains 0.9675 oz of pure gold, so at a $4,782 spot price, its melt value is about $4,626.

The numismatic value is what collectors will pay. For modern bullion coins (Eagles, Maples, Krugerrands, Buffalos), this is typically a small premium over melt — usually $50 to $150 depending on supply and demand. For rare dates, key coins, and high-grade certified pieces, the numismatic premium can be significant: a Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in MS-65 condition might sell for 2–3× melt value.

We pay whichever is higher. For common bullion, that's almost always near-melt plus a small premium. For anything graded by PCGS or NGC, bring it in encapsulated — we can pay significantly more for certified material.

Coins are more sensitive to handling than scrap gold. A few small habits make a big difference to what we can pay.

Don't clean Cleaning reduces numismatic value dramatically. Leave patina intact.
Keep holders If coins are in PCGS or NGC holders, never break them out.
Bring papers Original mint packaging and certificates add value for modern bullion.
Handle by edges Oils from fingers can tone surfaces. Use a cotton glove if you have one.

For high-grade bullion-era coins (e.g. MS-69/70 modern Eagles) certified slabs from PCGS or NGC usually carry a meaningful premium. For common-date pre-1933 in circulated condition, raw vs slabbed makes only a small difference.
Do I need ID to sell gold coins for cash in California?
Yes. State law requires every precious-metal transaction to be recorded with a valid government-issued photo ID. Bring your CA driver’s license, state ID or passport.
